The Story of Fat Bird Marketing

Fat Bird Marketing is more than a marketing agency. We are your creative partners, chaos wranglers, and the extra brainpower you borrow when you need to make something happen.

The company hatched in 2020 during one of the strangest chapters of modern life. Our founder, Janey Hawley, suddenly found herself without a job and plenty of ideas waiting to take flight. Like many people that year, she ended up on a pandemic friend Zoom happy hour with a glass of wine and a question that would officially shape the next chapter of her life.

“I think I want to start my own business, and I need a name,” she said.
​
Ideas flew around the call. Lisa, now business partner and best friend since eighth grade, blurted out Phat Bird. It was bold, funny, and instantly loved. Then came the discovery: a fried chicken restaurant in Atlanta already claimed it. So Janey went searching for a twist and found the simpler version Fat Bird on Urban Dictionary. It was defined as a phrase shouted to spark a reaction, shift energy, and invite positivity—something that could be contagious and usually yelled.

That was it. Everything clicked. Fat Bird captured the energy, the optimism, and the refusal to blend in. It was bold. It was unexpected. It was exactly what we wanted this business to be. Fat Bird Marketing was born that night, and it has been flying ever since.

For over a decade, Janey has created all things branding and marketing for several high-end and large restaurant groups. She began her career in Oklahoma City as a Marketing Manager for a raw vegan restaurant concept. She later moved to California, where she perfected her sales skills as an event manager. Janey moved to Colorado in 2017 and has created content for several area clients. Her loyalty to customers and passion for their brands has built many lifelong partnerships and friendships. Janey’s love for her work comes from meeting and exceeding her client’s marketing and branding. She likes to ski, hike, run with her dogs, and watch all the good shows in her free time.

Lisa keeps Fat Bird running and ensures everything and everyone is functioning as they should. She has a passion for organizing and owns all things related to operations, office management, project management, and administration. She graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma in 2011 with her degree in Business Management. Outside of office hours, she enjoys running, hiking, paddle boarding, as well as spending time with her husband and fur babies.

Chaos Coordinator
Halie is from Minnesota and made the leap to Colorado in 2021. She has a diverse background, starting her career as an EMT in Level 1 trauma centers and even serving as a medical consultant for touring bands. Most recently, she stepped into the role of a bakery manager, where she developed her leadership skills and discovered a passion for improving team collaboration. Halie thrives on connecting with people from all walks of life and finding innovative ways to enhance operational efficiency.

In her free time, she enjoys diving into a good book, hitting the trails for a hike, or exploring new hobbies—she’s always eager to learn and grow. When she’s not working or pursuing her interests, Halie cherishes quality time with her husband and their three pets.

Andra is a blog writer and editor. She makes sure everything is spelled correctly and sounds flocking fabulous! She graduated from Oklahoma State University in 2008 with her degree in Elementary Education. She still teaches 3rd grade in Oklahoma. When she is not blog writing, editing, or teaching, she enjoys playing board games, reading books, and spending time with her friends, husband, and two cats Pip and Dash.

With over a decade of experience in branding, signage, and creative strategy, she’s known for her ability to turn awkward conversations into aligned opportunities—and hesitant leads into happy clients. She doesn’t just connect dots—she connects people, purpose, and bold brand vision. Whether guiding a new client through their first campaign or helping a growing business refine its voice, Carina brings intuition, clarity, and just the right amount of sass to make it all click. She's also the kind of person who walks into a room, finds the one person standing alone, and has them laughing in 30 seconds. Relationships are her superpower, and she uses that power to make sure clients feel seen, heard, and wildly excited to work with Fat Bird.
